| 1. Helena Bonham-Carter (The King's Speech) | 2. Barbara Hershey (Black Swan, Answers to Nothing) | 3. Bryce Dallas Howard (Hereafter, I'm With Cancer) | 4. Rebecca Hall (The Town) | 5. Elle Fanning (Somewhere) |
| I'm putting Bonham-Carter in the frontrunner spot simply because I like her work (mostly in Tim Burton films), and because she has a prior nomination making her semidue. Plus she's playing Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother), and playing British royalty tend to always win Oscars. | Hershey was a big actress in the '80s but she didn't get her first and only Oscar nomination until '96. She hasn't done too much since but she's getting buzz for her role in Black Swan. I've also discovered her possibilites for Answers to Nothing so it could be possible too. | Howard has been good before in films like The Village. Perhaps she can finally do her pa proud by getting her first Oscar nomination for this supernatural Clint Eastwood film. There's no details on the film or what her role is, but Eastwood always gets good performances out of his actors. | Hall has been a rising star lately due to good performances in The Prestige and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. I can see her getting her first nomination sooner or later, and this just might be her year for this crime thriller directed by Ben Affleck. | The younger Fanning sister stars in this Sofia Coppola film as the estranged daughter of an actor. I can see Elle accomplish what Dakota came close to doing several times but never accomplished: get an Oscar nomination for an extremely young performance. |
Close Behind
| 6. Julianne Moore (The Kids are All Right) | 7. Freida Pinto (Miral, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger) | 8. Saoirse Ronan (The Way Back) | 9. Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life, The Debt, Coriolanus) | 10. Mila Kunis (Black Swan) |
| I was quite surprised that Moore wasn't nominated for A Single Man last year. Now that Kate Winslet has an Oscar, Moore becomes the most overdue actress with a 0/4 record. I'm sure she'll win some year and this could very well be it. She plays a lesbian mother in this drama. | Pinto's big breakout in Slumdog Millionaire opened a lot of doors for her. She's in the latest Woody Allen film, but I'm betting on her odds being better for the Julian Schnabel film Miral about a 1948 orphanage in Jerusalem. There are those who think she should have been nominated for Slumdog anyway. | Despite how talented the best actress nominees were last year, I still think Ronan should have been nominated for The Lovely Bones. She could get a consolation prize by getting her second nomination for this Peter Weir drama. I don't know what the role is about but Weir only makes good films. | Here's an actress I haven't heard of before, but some are buzzing about her performance in Tree of Life. I decided to also throw in two of her other roles into the mix this year. She could end up being the lone complete no-name nominee of the year. | Here's a prediction I came up with and am putting a patent on. Kunis has been getting more and more movie roles lately so her exposure is expanding. I believe she plays a competing ballerina in this film, and Darron Aronofsky always gets great performances out of actresses. |
